Small businesses in USA are leading all the way in contributing to economy in terms of employment. Surveys conducted by U.S Chamber of Commerce, reveal small businesses as the primary sources for job creation, pushing down the big businesses and federal government agencies. The role of small firms in U.S employment is very significant and cannot be overlooked.
Small firms rule the U.S business sector with 99.9% of the total firms being represented by them. They are found to make noticeable contributions to the economy, majorly in terms of employment. In regard to their contributions, small firms are declared as the potential job engines of the country.
Employ half of all private sector employees
According to US Small Business Administration (SBA), 50% of private employment is generated by small firms, contributing to 44% of the private payroll. A significant percent (43%) of high tech workers such as scientists, engineers, computer programmers are hired by small companies. On the other hand, contradicting to their size, small firms are found to have 13 times more patent production rate per employee than larger firms.
Net new jobs
Small businesses are an excellent source for creating new jobs. According to SBA, for the period 1993 to 2009, 9.8 million of the total 15 million jobs were created by the SMBs, indicating their dominance over larger firms as potential job creators.
Comparison with large companies
The small businesses are on par with large companies in every aspect of the employment. According to the SBA data, the private sector employment is shared equally among small and larger firms, each employing 60 million people. Even the part time employment is also maintained equally between them, both sharing 21% and 18% respectively.
When compared to larger firms, the smaller ones are found to provide employment for Hispanics, low or moderately educated individuals, 65 years or above aged individuals and support undeserved demographics.
Job creation and destruction
Analyzing the small business employment trends, the rate of job creation is rapid in the nascent stage, which is found to decrease gradually with the increasing age of the company. Not all the firms which are established are capable of surviving, hence, the rate of job creation was found equal to the rate of deaths of job. This phenomenon of equal job creation and destruction is termed as "creative destruction" in the business communication. This trend results in huge employment changes. It was found that 95% of the new job and deaths take place in the firms having 20 or fewer employees, which contribute to the 90% of the employers. Hence, it can be concluded that small firms are responsible for bulk of employment changes.
Apart from the above reasons, the economic downturn was also seen as the factor responsible for uncertainty in job creation in small businesses as most of them are struggling for expansion of their businesses.
Small business owners' views on hiring
Presently, with economy being under recession, small businesses are very skeptical over their hiring plans. Hiring is generally seen as the indicator of business expansion. As most of the small companies are still struggling to overcome the aftermaths of the recession, the expansion plans are being kept on hold.
As per the survey by U.S Chamber of Commerce, the potential threats faced by small businesses in the present situation are, higher taxes, high budget deficits, increasing role of government in economy, national debt, labor unions and most importantly the slow pace of economic recovery. Overcoming these threats is a major challenge for their owners.
Employment has a predominant role in economic recovery, as creation of jobs, translates to expansion of businesses, which indicates economic progress. Though, small businesses in US are struggling with 'creative destruction' and repercussions of the great recession, they are attributing to massive role in job creation today and promising the same in the future.
